Q.  What are Operating Systems?

Ans. Operating system is a collection of operative programs that provide an interface for the user to interact with the computer. An operating system performs basic tasks such as

  • It manages the hardware resources.
  • It manages the software resources.
  • It provides a user interface.
  • It provides the facility to use the hardware without knowing its detail.

Q.  Define types of Interfaces provided by Operating Systems.

Ans. GUI (Graphical User Interface)

In the GUI operating system icons, windows, and buttons are used as visual components. These objects are used to perform different tasks. Users of these operating systems need not memorize commands. Users can perform a task like copying a file without writing a command e.g. windows, Linux, Solaris etc.

Command Line Interface

In CLI, A user needs to write a command to perform a certain task. To write commands user needs to memorize them. These operating systems are providing textual interfaces e.g. DOS (Disk Operating System), UNIX etc.

Q. What is a Graphical User Interface?

Ans. A Graphical User Interface (GUI) is a user interface that utilizes visual elements such as icons, windows, and buttons to facilitate user interaction with a computer system. It allows users to easily interact with the system by visually representing tasks and providing intuitive controls. Users can perform a task like copying a file without writing a command e.g. windows, Linux, and Solaris, windows 98, windows 200, windows XP.

Q. What is Command Line Interface?

Ans.  A command line interface operating system provides a command prompt to the user for typing the different commands to interact with the computer. To write commands user needs to memorize them. These operating systems are providing textual interfaces e.g. DOS (Disk Operating System), UNIX etc.

Q. What is a Desktop?

Ans. The on-screen work area on which windows, icons, menus, and dialog boxes appear is called the desktop. Different icons, menus, and dialog boxes appear on the desktop. It is the main screen from where users can interact with the system.

Q. What is My Computer folder?

Ans. This folder is placed on the desktop. It shows all the disks installed on a computer. Drives are displayed as icons in the My Computer folder. Using my computer folder, we can access our files and folders to store and retrieve data.

Q. What is Recycle Bin folder?

Ans. This folder contains all deleted files and folders. From here, you can permanently delete or restore deleted files and folders to their original locations. The recycle bin temporarily stores files and folders that you delete. It does not permanently erase these files and folders from the physical media.

Q. What is My Documents folder?

Ans.  This folder is used to store one’s work or data. It is a default storage folder for a lot of application programs. Users store their documents, music, pictures, downloads, and other files in “My Documents This folder is visible on the desktop.

Q. What is Windows Explorer?

Ans. Windows Explorer is an application that provides detailed information about your files, folders, and drives. You can use it to view the organization of your files and to perform tasks such as copying, moving, and renaming files, as well as other file, folder, and drive-related actions.

Q. What is Internet Explorer?

Ans.  Internet Explorer is a web browser it is used to browse different websites. It is the part of Windows operating system. It has very power full features with high security.
